Will you issue me a HETAS certificate?

We cannot issue you a certificate as we are not HETAS registered. A job can only be completed and signed off by a professional installer who has been tested and approved by HETAS. If we have assisted you in booking a 3rd party installer and you’ve not yet received a certificate from them, please contact us and we can check for you.

Can you supply boiler stoves?

Yes, we can supply boiler back stoves but we do not keep any in stock or have any on display. We cannot offer any advice on installation or offer any contacts for an install service.

How many fires do you have on display?

As of now, we have 400+ fires and 60+ mediawalls on live display in our showroom. This number can change month to month as we’re continuously producing more, replacing displays with new and updating existing displays. If you need to know if we have something specific on display please give us a call.

Can I add a log burner in a prefab house?

Yes, we can have a log burner installed in a prefab house, but certain conditions need to be met. Please call our showroom, visit or send a message to discuss.

Can I use my fire as a primary heat source?

We do not recommend replacing your home’s internal heating system with a wood-burning stove, electric fire, or gas fire. All fires of this kind are classed as a secondary heat source. Whilst these fires can be used to heat your room, we recommend that you always have a functioning primary heat source. Electric fires for example, only produce up to 2kw of heat output which is enough to get your living room nice and cosy but when used for extended periods may lead to damage.

How do I light my wood burning stove?

Lighting your stove correctly is very important, without it, you may struggle to build a hot enough fire to dispel a cold pug in the colder months and without the correct air control settings you can smother your fire. You can learn more about lighting your fire, choosing the correct wood, and more on our blog. Our friends at Stovax have also created a great video explaining the process.

Why has the glass on my stove broken?

Our stoves are manufactured to high standards with tough materials, from reliable brands, but it has a hard job, and ‘consumables’ such as your glass or rope seals can deteriorate over time. There are a few things that can affect the life of your consumables.

Constant High Temperatures – Think of your car, if you drive faster and harder for long periods you will need to replace your brakes etc – if you are running your stove full blast for long periods it can lower the life expectancy of your parts. This is a more common issue for multi-fuel stoves as coal burns hotter for longer and produces more byproducts.

Regular Maintenance – Keeping your stove free from too much ash, cleaning your flue/chimney regularly. More frequently if you are burning coal.

Do you have any stoves with a tracery door?

Yes, we have a selection both on display in our showroom and available to order. Please visit our showroom and our helpful staff can show you some examples.

Can you put a TV above a multifuel or woodburning stove?

It is possible but methods vary depending on the type of fire. Please contact us to discuss the specifics.

I have a fine black dust in my home?

Burning wood of any kind, over time, will build up a fine layer of particle dust in the room where the fire is burning. This is generally no problem as normal cleaning schedules completely negate this but if you have not wiped down your coffee table in a long while you may see a little dust. This can be minimized by using an enclosed stove and using the correct type of wood.

What is slumbering and is slumbering my stove bad?

With relation to a woodburning stove, slumbering is when you run the stove well below the optimal temperature for an extended period. If you leave your stove lit overnight to revive it in the morning without relighting, then you slumber the fire. Running the stove well below the optimal temperature can cause issues with an increase in fine particles blocking up your flue and should not be done unless your stove is designed to operate that way (most stoves are). The same can be said for running a needlessly powerful stove at low temperatures for extended periods because anything more is too hot for the room.

Are you HETAS registered?

Washington Fireplaces is not HETAS registered but the install teams we can book for you are.

We understand installation can be an important but stressful last step. That’s why, after discussing your new project with our team and discovering the right products, we can assist you in engaging with a 3rd party install team. We can provide details of teams experienced with our products and have delivered top-quality work for our customers. We handle all the bookings for you to ensure minimal disruption and help keep your installation hassle-free.

Because they have completed so many jobs with our products, these teams know the best methods to transport and install them with ease, keeping costs down and quality of work high.

Solid Fuel Stove Installation: When choosing someone to install your wood or coal-burning stove you must use a team that’s registered by a relevant competent person scheme such as HETAS. HETAS require that each registered person is fully trained in this specific type of installation and can do so safely and efficiently. We can provide details of an experienced local team that has installed our products many times. We even handle the booking for you to make your project as hassle-free as possible.

What additional accessories are helpful for my stove?

There are a few things you can buy to make your life easier, these include;

A stove glove – an oven mitt with a higher temperature rating. It is used when handling the stove after it has been running for a while and is extra hot. Whilst many stoves use various materials to lower the temperature of the areas that you touch, a glove can help.

A brush – the brush is helpful when cleaning out the ash from the fire and the hearth.

An ash bucket – any metal bucket will do the trick, as long as it is nonflammable and it’s best to have a lid to stop any ash blowing out. (tip: Ash can be used in your garden as a fertilizer for some plant types that like more acid)

What is my warranty period?

Your warranty period can vary depending on the brand of the product and the individual product itself. Most warranties are held with the manufacturer and not Washington Fireplaces. All items come with a standard 12-month warranty but many products offer extended 2-year warranties, or 10-year warranties with conditions such as proof of a yearly service. Some extended warranties after some time may only cover the cost of parts and not installation. We will provide you with warranty terms in our showroom for a specific product. All products that are manufactured by Washington Fireplaces come with a standard 12 months parts warranty.

Do you supply Bio-Ethanol fires?

We do not stock, fit, or sell any bio-ethanol fires. This is because we they provide less heat than wood alternatives, the fuel is more expensive, its corrosiveness, low flame luminosity, and lower vapor pressure (making cold starts difficult). We believe that overall there are better options available.

Can I see the stoves in action before purchasing?

Absolutely! We encourage you to visit our showroom in the North East UK, where you can see a variety of our stoves in operation. This allows you to experience their warmth and view their design up close.

How often should I have my stove serviced?

We recommend having your stove serviced annually by a qualified technician to ensure it’s operating safely and efficiently. Regular servicing can also extend the lifespan of your stove. Remember, it’s important to hire a certified fire engineer if you do not use our services.

How do I choose the right size stove for my room?

The ideal stove size depends on the room size, layout, and insulation. Our experts can help you calculate the appropriate heat output (measured in kilowatts) required for your space. You can also visit our showroom to see live examples with all of the home equipment already installed.

What maintenance is required for a stove?

Regular maintenance includes cleaning the ash out of the stove, checking and cleaning the flue, and annual servicing by a qualified professional. This ensures your stove operates safely and efficiently. For gas and electric stoves maintenance varies.

Do I need a chimney to install a stove?

Yes, most stoves require a chimney to safely vent the smoke and gases produced during burning. If you don’t have an existing chimney, we can assist with installing a suitable flue system. You do not need a chimney for a gas or electric stove.

What is the difference between a wood burning stove and a multi-fuel stove?

A wood burning stove is designed specifically for burning wood logs, whereas a multi-fuel stove can burn various types of fuel, including wood, coal, and smokeless fuels. Multi-fuel stoves have a grate for coal to burn on and a removable ash pan for easy cleaning.
